supermarkets, especially.

the ways in which washington heights/ inwood has been overrun with run-of-the-mill, WASPy, “i used to live on 89th and broadway’ ass white folks is SO PALPABLE when i read these yelp reviews. 

“i don’t know why this supermarket insists on writing everything in spanish.”

“i hate that they don’t have kale, but yuca and malanga and a bunch of stuff i don’t eat”

“why isn’t there a bigger organic food section?”

“the eggs and dairy are always poor quality, nothing like my old neighborhood on 96th street”

“the meat isn’t ever any good, and probably from factory farms; this market gets two out of five stars.”

without any regard to the fact that (a) this neighborhood is largely dominican, (b) this AIN’T THE UPPER GODDAMN WEST SIDE, and (c) the people who run these markets and who shop in these markets are the people who’ve historically been in this neighborhood since before your useless tail ever dreamt of living in NYC.

**edit** saying you don’t trust the refrigeration in the store sounds so much to me like “these black and brown ppl probably don’t know how to keep our precious white ppl foods safe. they’re savages. look at them. the store smells bad.” but never once do you complain to management in english OR spanish. because the store smells like meat. meat has a smell. they have a goddamn butcher shop in the back of the store and it is huge.
