before i lose my style

we got a really really positive blurb in lineout: http://lineout.thestranger.com/lineout/archives/2012/07/23/song-sparrow-research-evolutionary-folk and it really highlighted my frustration with indie rock in a couple of ways - 

so we hired a press guy for this album and a couple of us went broke with the pressing of the records and the press guy fees. and i’m really excited about/proud of this record for sure, but we would not be getting any press at all or any radio plays had we not paid a third party several hundred dollars to say the exact same things that we would be saying without him. i mean i’m super grateful and he’s doing an awesome job and i certainly don’t have time to be aggressive with people to hustle our stuff, but it still feels off. and i know that music directors and reviewers are generally swamped and need some way to differentiate one nobody local group for another, but i wish that differentiation wasn’t so often the word “marketing” attached to the end of the name of the person giving them stuff.

second, i know that everyone needs a Story or a Hook to sell their stuff but one-sheets are ridiculous, especially in a band with five people. no one is going to get exactly the representation they want and the “story” of the band generally oversimplifies things to the point where it seems like the only purpose of the damn thing is to be an easy template to c/p for lazy reviewers.

i know these are all crazy entry level ruminations and i don’t want it to sound like i’m not super stoked about any amount of attention we’re getting but it just feels really uncomfortable that the reason why we have had any words printed about us at all is because we could pony up.
