It was one bad day.

There are two new albums out today that I’d like to go buy, but so many record stores have closed in the last few months that I don’t honestly know if there’s one that I can comfortably get to and get back from on my lunch break. AND I WORK IN MIDTOWN MANHATTAN.
It wasn’t supposed to come to this, was it?
I went through this very thing when the Neko Case album came out,...

People went bonkers over that Billy Bob business on the CBC (which was a different breed of the same species), but Tim and Eric completely throw interviews on the reg. A friend of mine is the program director at a college radio station, and he wrangled an on-air interview for one of his DJs, a huge fan of the show… but when he got Tim and Eric on the phone, everything turned disastrous....

When Bobby had been seeing Ms. Ferrell for about six weeks, one of her friends told him that Ms. Ferrell was dying of cancer. When he confronted her, Bobby said she told him “the sob story—‘I’m estranged from my parents, I don’t know who my birth parents are, my adoptive parents are abusive.’ It never occurred to me that it would be odd that someone who’s dying of cancer, who has three...

It’s mortifying to realize that you knew/know someone like Kenny Powers and might even have humored the guy by sharing a beer or two with him. I want to laugh at Powers’ willful ignorance but I already feel implicated. There isn’t that distance between the characters and me that I usually maintain when watching a comedy.

– Marc Hogan. Better if it is because the only type of band to pick Girl in a Coma without knowledge of its connotation would be an emo band so humorless as to not be Smiths fans. And anyway, it is, because the band members are three women of the “Hispanic Morrissey fans” cohort. Girl in a...

– Whit Stillman, critiquing his critics in his novelization of The Last Days of Disco. The premise of the book is that one of the characters — ad man Jimmy Steinway — has been commissioned to author the novelization of Stillman’s screenplay, and he takes the opportunity to set things right, at least...

– Don’t Confuse the Experience with the Product (via Lindsay). This puts me in mind of the glowing A.O. Scott pullquote about Film Forum’s popcorn posted at their concession stand, for which reason I got a kick out of seeing huge bags of Orville Redenbacher kernels being delivered one...
